Nestled between suffragette posters and specimen papers, on the Atom Gallery walls in Stoke Newington, London, hang the bright letterpress tip-ins from the Baddeley Brothers’ book.
Designed by David Pearson, the iconic examples of typography and letterpress have been chosen by Hackney-based letterpress studio Pixel Press. To be featured in an inspirational three-week exhibition ‘Eat Lead’. Created with the intention of enthusing creatives to continue with traditional print techniques. ‘Eat Lead’ showcases the vital role that printers play in the process, from past to present, featuring work from Bunker Type, Double Dagger, Luke Lucas and Novo Typo.
Visiting the gallery, Baddeley Brothers’ Director Charles Pertwee commented: “There’s a diverse selection of work here, from talented printers, typographers and graphic designers from all around the world. As well as some fascinating examples of posters from the start of the twentieth century, there’s also some quite experimental work which really shows how contemporary letterpress can be.
“It’s an honour for our work to hang in an art gallery that is known for celebrating the craftsmanship and individuality of design and print. I hope this exhibition has inspired another generation to use traditional print techniques.”
