This year’s Im-Print Im-Press program saw five students design and produce a print product through a university and industry collaboration.
And at the project’s 10th anniversary between Ravensbourne University, GF Smith, Made Thought and Baddeley Brothers, the number had a poignant ‘impact’ because it also focussed on a sustainable luxury package that has to both impress on the shelf and protect the contents.
Sara Hedlund, Noah Wilcox, Bex Bokenham, Tom Wayne, Eva Velesco were this year’s students from Ravensbourne who took up the challenge to create a sustainable light bulb packaging which could survive a ten-metre drop.
Materials used included foil in 6075 Poseidon Blue and Colorplan Azure 270 gsm.
As usual, they were confined by budget and the limitations (orwe like to think opportunities) of the print process of foiling, folding and die cutting, but they were unlimited in their creative expression.
Graphic Design student Bex takes up the story: “It was an amazing opportunity to work with Baddeley Brothers, GF Smith, and Made Thought. It was good to get a better understanding of how budgeting would work in real life practice.
“I really enjoyed working with Sara, Noah, Tom, and Eva. We all just clicked and I’ve made really good friends from it. We all sparked ideas from each other.
“I learned that the printing process involves preparing a design correctly and carefully transferring it onto paper while considering things like colour, quality, and materials to achieve the best final result.
“We faced challenges of not using adhesive and having to fit into an A3 sheet size. Baddeley Brothers helped us understand how the print process worked and gave us lots of useful tips.”
Commercial director Charles Pertwee added: “The team’s fantastic collaboration is a perfect way to celebrate 10 years of Im-print Im-press! Although the technical capabilities were impressive, it was the clever illustrations that impressed the judges this year.”
